How to Use the Transfer Database

What's in the Database?

The transfer database contains course-by-course credit transfer information between the public post-secondary institutions in Newfoundland and Labrador for the academic years from 1994-95 to 1998-99 and from 1997-98 to 2008-09.

Each record in the database represents one course offered by a "Sending Institution." For each of these courses, the possible transfer credit which may be awarded by one or more "Receiving Institutions" is shown.

The list of "sending institutions" starting in 1997-98 varies from previous years due to the restructuring of the college system. For the academic years prior to 1997-98 the list of "sending institutions" includes:

  • Cabot College of Applied Arts, Technology & Continuing Education
  • Central Newfoundland Regional College of Applied Arts, Technology & Continuing Education
  • Eastern College of Applied Arts, Technology & Continuing Education
  • Labrador College of Applied Arts, Technology & Continuing Education
  • Fisheries & Marine Institute of Memorial University
  • Sir Wilfred Grenfell College
  • St. John's Campus of Memorial University
  • Westviking College of Applied Arts, Technology & Continuing Education

For the 1997-98 and subsequent academic years the list of "sending institutions" includes:

  • College of the North Atlantic
  • Memorial University (St. John's and Sir Wilfred Grenfell College campuses)
  • Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University

What's Not in the Database?

The database DOES NOT LIST EVERY COURSE OFFERED AT EVERY SENDING INSTITUTION. It DOES include transfer information provided by the Receiving Institutions, representing established transfer agreements and arrangements. The absence of information about a particular course or that course's transfer potential at a particular receiving institution, does not necessarily mean that transfer is unavailable. It indicates that no formal agreement has been established, or, if a new agreement is in place, the Database has not yet been updated. Additional credit transfer is considered by receiving institutions on request, and credit may ultimately be granted. To be absolutely certain about transfer possibilities, check with the institutions involved.

The database DOES NOT LIST THE PREREQUISITES required for the various courses. Individuals are to refer to the appropriate institutional calendar for such information.

DISCLAIMER: Every reasonable effort is made to keep this information accurate and up-to-date. All final decisions regarding the transferability of courses should be confirmed with the institutions involved.

How Do I Search the Database?

The database search function will find records on the basis of sending institution and course.

Step 1: Select the ACADEMIC YEAR

Select the year in which the coursework was done or will be done. Academic years are defined as running from Sept 1 of one year through Aug 31 of the following year. Therefore the 1997-98 academic year begins Sept 1, 1997 and ends August 31, 1998.

Step 2: Select the SENDING INSTITUTION

From the scrollable list select the institution where the course in question was (or will be) completed.

Step 3: Select the Subject area from the scrollable list

Step 4: SUBMIT QUERY

When the Search Results Are Displayed...

When one or more records are found, they will be displayed on your screen in table format. The 1st column will show the course name and number, the 2nd column will show the receiving institution which will accept a transfer, the 3rd column will show the corresponding transfer course name and number, the 4th column will show any comments associated with the transfer arrangement.

NOTE: Please refer to the on-line Explanation of Terms section of the Transfer Guide for a definition of sending and receiving institutions.
