    Colleges of Applied Arts, Technology and Continuing Education

    In the province, there are five Colleges of Applied Arts, Technology and Continuing Education comprised of 23 campuses (see previous page). Each College is responsible for delivering educational services throughout the province. These include:

    1. two and three-year programs leading to a Diploma.
    2. full-time, occupational courses leading to a Certificate.
    3. basic literacy and academic upgrading programs (eg. Adult Basic Education).
    4. first-year university courses (Burin, Carbonear, Clarenville, Lewisporte, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor and Labrador City).
    5. career enhancement and personal development programs (eg. Career Exploration for Women, Career Exploration for Youth, Job Readiness Training, Orientation to Non-traditional occupations).
    6. courses conducted in formal institutional settings, and courses delivered in communities to meet local needs.
    7. various skills training programs funded by Human Resources Development Canada through initiatives of the Labour Market Development Strategy.
    8. applied research and technology transfer.
    9. courses conducted with other institutions such as Memorial University, the Marine Institute, community agencies, and the private sector.
    10. special interest, hobby and craft courses on evening, part-time, or workshop basis.

    Memorial University of Newfoundland

    Memorial University (MUN) is the province's only university. Memorial is comprised of the St. John's campus and the Fisheries and Marine Institute located in St. John's; Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, located in Corner Brook; a residential campus in Harlow, England; and the Institut Frecker on the island of St. Pierre.

    In addition, the following Colleges of Applied Arts, Technology and Continuing Education offer first-year university courses:

    As an affiliate of Memorial University, the Marine Institute provides training in all aspects of Fisheries and Marine Technology. The Institute offers one-year Advanced Diploma programs, three-year Diploma of Technology programs, two-year Technician Diploma programs, and Technical and Vocational Certificate programs of one year or less. Additionally, shorter programs, extension and evening courses are offered on a regular basis.

    A Bachelor's Degree in Maritime Studies has been approved by Senate. This degree program is a professional degree designed to educate and train students who will initially proceed to careers in the marine transportation industry. The degree program is structured to provide two entry options. Students can proceed straight through the program from initial entry. The design of the program with a basic first year component, a technical component, and an enrichment component facilitates entry into the program with advanced standing for those who have completed a diploma at the Marine Institute or some other maritime academy.

    Sir Wilfred Grenfell College

    Sir Wilfred Grenfell College offers the following degree programs:
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts: Theatre and Visual Arts
  • Bachelor of Arts: English, Cognitive Studies and Psychology
  • Bachelor of Environmental Science
  • Students who wish to complete an arts or science degree or enter a professional program at Memorial University may complete one or two years of courses towards these degrees at Grenfell.

    Memorial University Distance Education

    A variety of credit and non-credit courses are available from Memorial using distance techniques and technology. A print component (course manual, text or readings) is basic to all distance education courses. The print component is usually augmented by audio and/or video tape modules as well as meetings on the university's teleconference network. Teleconference sessions give the learner the opportunity to interact with the instructor and other students.     Nursng Education Program

    Beginning in the Fall, 1996, the basic nursing education program offered by the hospital schools of nursing is being repalced by the four-year Bachelor of Nursing (collaborative) Program (BN). The program reflects the collaborative efforts of all five schools of nursing in the province and is beign offered at three locations: Memorial University of Newfoundland School of Nursing (St. John's), the Centre for Nursing Studies (St. John's), and Western Memorial School of Nursing (Corner Brook).

    Apprenticeship Training

    Apprenticeship training involves on-the-job training under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson, and periods of in-school training to learn the technical knowledge required to become competent in that occupation. The number and the length of on-the-job and in school technical training periods varies depending on the trade. When learning an occupation through the apprenticeship system, the individual becomes an Apprentice by having his or her Apprenticeship Agreement registered with the Department of Education, Division of Institutional and Industrial Education.
